Bison Trail
The Bison Trail connects the Hudson-Meng Education and Research Center with Toadstool Geological Park in Northwest Nebraska. The hike winds across the beautiful Oglala National Grassland connecting unique geological features and ancient rock formations and fossil beds.
Hudson-Meng houses one of the most important paleo-archeological discoveries in North America. Discovered in 1954, the Bison antiquus bonebed has been the subject of three archeological digs and there is still no clear answer to the mystery of how and why hundreds of bison met their death at this site.
The otherworldly Toadstool Geologic Park is known for its unusual rock formations and fossil deposits. Hikers enjoy looking for signs of fossils that give scientists insight into ancient animal behavior (NOTE: fossil collection is prohibited). A replica of a 1929 sod house was constructed in 1984, demonstrating the ingenuity of grassland homesteaders and their use of the only materials available to them.
