White River Trail
Expected to be part of The Great American Rail-Trail, the White River Trail has stunning views of tree- covered buttes and crosses the White River on former railroad bridges. It connects Crawford, NE to Fort Robinson State Park. Nebraska’s largest state park, Fort Robinson is filled with history from the surrender and killing of Native American Chief Crazy Horse to being the site of the Cheyenne Breakout. Buffalo Soldiers were stationed here, and it served as a German prisoner-of-war camp during WWII. The Fort is also home to two museums – Trailside Museum, featuring the Clash of the Mammoths exhibit along with other geological gems, and the Fort Robinson History Center, which tells the story of the Fort’s 150+ year history. There are also numerous hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, fishing opportunities and more, including overnight stay options. While a state park permit is usually required, May 17 is Free Park Entry Day. The City of Crawford was established as a tent city to support Fort Robinson. Today, the city boasts a beautiful 9-hole golf course and is home to the third oldest PRCA rodeo in the state, held over the July 4 holiday, and the largest outdoor rock show in the state, held over the Labor Day weekend.
Take extra time to visit the two other area year rounds/seasonal at Chadron State College and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument.
