Chadron Art Alley
#ChadronMade Murals provide the perfect backdrop for that selfie or family vacation photo.
The concepts for Art Alley have all been designed by local artists, and community-wide painting days brought them to reality. Now you can have even more fun as you explore Art Alley with the Scavenger Hunt, which includes some extra stops to view Chadron’s historical murals!
More murals are planned in the future. To stay up-to-date with Art Alley, visit them here, and if you happen to be visiting us during a #PaintTheTown weekend pick up a brush and join in the fun.
All of the addresses listed for Art Alley are for the storefronts. Most of the murals are on either the back or sides of the buildings.
- 269 Main Street: The back wall of 269 Main Street, home of Western View Real Estate, features a butterfly and floral mural designed by local student Kayah Leigh while in high school. Leigh now attends Chadron State College, where she is studying graphic design and is a member of the CSC Art Guild. She's always willing to put her skills to use in Chadron's #PaintTheTown effort.
- 265 Main Street: The mural on the back wall of 265 Main Street, the location of Service Barber, is titled "Hate Has No Home Here." Designed by local artists and Chamber of Commerce Director Gabby Michna, the mural speaks to the community's efforts of inclusiveness and repeats the phrase "Hate Has No Home Here" in several languages. Michna, a member and founder of the Art Alley Committee, has a passion for creative arts and connecting people through working together to help make a difference.
- 251 Main Street: The mural on the back wall of 251 Main Street, home of Molecajete's, tells the story of the fur-trading era. Designed by long-time local and art teacher Travis Hencey, it reflects Chadron's heritage as an important spot in the fur-trading era and celebrates the annual Fur Trade Days event, which takes place each July. Hencey was one of the original founders behind Art Alley and is a member and founder of the Art Alley Committee.
- 249 Main Street: Added to Art Alley in 2023, the Natural Food Co-op mural, located on the business' back wall, was the work of the Art Alley team, local designer, Jackson Smith, countless volunteers and the calculated direction of the Chadron Natural Food Co-Op Board. The member owned co-op opened in 1976 and is open to all shoppers, no membership required. The mural features a cornucopia of fresh produce, honeycombs and the sunshine that makes it all possible.
- 239 Main Street: The Postage Stamp murals at 239 Main Street, the location of the Spirit of Faith Church, are located at the top of the south-facing wall and represent Chadron, Chadron High School and Chadron State College. The artwork was designed by Tristan Stephenson, a regional artist and a recent graduate of the Chadron State College art program. He consistently practices art in all forms and helps the #PaintTheTown efforts whenever he's available.
- 223 Main Street: Local artist Aspen Graves designed this mural for the back wall of 223 Main Street, which is home to TaDa Art Studio and Quilt Shop. TaDa is one of our only local studio spaces that provides art classes, quilting classes and many other services in the community. This mural is a mix of mediums - graphic design, quilting, watercolor - to showcase the full collection offered at TaDa.
- 219 Main Street: The mural on the back wall of 219 Main Street, home of Bloom, was the first Art Alley creation completed. Titled "The Good Life" it was designed by local artist and Chadron Chamber of Commerce director Gabby Michna, a member and founder of the Art Alley Committee. Michna has a passion for creative arts and connecting people through working together to help make a difference.
- 201 Main Street: Located behind Gardner, Loutzenhiser and Ryan, P.C. in the heart of historical downtown Chadron, this mural was a labor of love in dedication, honor and celebration of local accountant, the late Annie Loutzenhiser. Local artist and art teacher Travis Hencey was tasked with coming up with his own rendition of the famous Normal Rockwell piece "Beating The Deadline." The result showcases what this firm is up against on an annual basis, the landscape and history of our area, along with crucial pieces and details to honor and celebrate the life of Loutzenhiser and her family.
- 139 Main Street: The mural at 139 Main Street is on the back wall of Chadron Glass, one of the buildings that is part of Chadron's downtown historic district. Artist Averielle Sager came up with a design representative of Chadron, repping our 308 area code. The mural includes a tropical Hawaiian theme inspired by the business owners' vacations to Hawaii.
- 248 West Second Street: The mural at 248 West Second Street is located on the west wall of The Chadron Record. Celebrating the First Amendment and the right to a free press, the design was created by Gerry "The Gov" Kathol, an undercover artist who hides out at hidden gems in our community, laying low with his tremendous talent and art ability. Catch his work at other local places like Olde Main Street Inn and the Bean Broker. The Chadron Record is also part of the city’s Downtown Historical District. Behind the stucco is one of the city’s oldest brick buildings; it’s been home to several businesses and urban legend claims its second floor “sleeping rooms” were actually occupied by Chadron’s working women and their male clients. Another historical note of interest is the original 1800s-era horse trough on the west side of the building, the only one still in existence today.
- 127 W. 2nd Street: The Make Art Not War mural is located on the east side of The Marketplace of Chadron, located at 127 West 2nd St. The mural was designed and executed by Ruby Tewahade to cover up graffiti. Tewahade, who attends Chadron High School, created this design to help promote peace through public art and spread some color and craftsmanship over what once was a poorly painted graffiti tag. High school art teacher Travis Hencey and a few others assisted Tewahade with the project. *As of June 21, 2021, the mural is still in progress but is expected to be finished soon.
- 279 Main Street: The Red Cloud Buttes near Crawford are showcased in the Chadron Chiropractic mural, added to Art Alley in 2024. Located on the back wall of 279 Main St., the mural depicts the stunning buttes of Northwest Nebraska. The Red Cloud Buttes towered over the Red Cloud Agency, the Indian Agency located near Crawford from 1873-1877. It was established for Chief Red Cloud and his band of Oglala Lakota, along with other Northern Plains Native Americans. Local artist Jodi Motz designed the mural based on a photograph by friend Brandon Davenport. Chadron Chiropractic owners Scott and Rachel Johnson asked that their love of fly fishing at Fort Robinson State Park also be included in the mural.
- Chadron Water Tower: Art Alley moved out of town with the addition of a new mural on the Chadron Water Tower south on Highway 385. The skillfully crafted historical scene was created by local artist Jerry Kathol, known as “The Gov.” The mural depicts the journey of Native Americans and French traders meeting in the fall after a long summer of hunting, skinning, drying and preparing their goods to be traded. The trading post in the mural is the Bordeaux Trading, which was established in 1837 by James Bordeaux for the American Fur Company. The trading post has been reconstructed at the Museum of the Fur Trade east of Chadron on Highway 20. Kathol not only designed the artwork but executed the painting of the entire mural himself, with the blessing of the Chadron City Council.
