2020 Fur Trade Days

July 8-12

Fur Trade Days 2020 will look drastically different than in previous years. Due to the public health guidelines expected to be in place at the time of the event, there will be no carnival, no street dances and no Traders’ Market. The FTD board is brainstorming ideas for events that could continue in a way that meets the guidelines, and organizers of other FTD events will each have to make their own determinations on how to re-imagine the events or on cancellation. 

Events currently planning to proceed include: 

  • Buckskinners Camp – July 9-11
  • Classics in the Park Cruise – July 10, 5-7 p.m. 
  • Lions Club Parade – July 11, 10 a.m. (Spectators must park along the route and remain in their vehicles.)
  • Free Swim at the Chadron Area Aquatics & Wellness Center, July 11, Noon-6 p.m.
  • Northwest Nebraska Bingo – Help Crawford and Chadron celebrate the 4th of July and Fur Trade Days all month long. The July bingo card will be available here July 1. 
  • FTD Historical Scavenger Hunt: The Museum of the Fur Trade, the Dawes County Historical Museum, Bean Broker Pub & Coffee House and the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center are sponsoring this contest. Report to the Sandoz Center July 10 at 10 a.m. for instructions on solving the secret sentence and complete the hunt on your own before turning in your answer sheet at the Sandoz Center July 11 at 2 p.m. for a chance to win prizes!

Saturday

10 a.m. – Parade (Buckskinners who wish to participate will assemble at 10th & Main Streets)

2 p.m. – Couples shoot, followed by three rifle matches. A separate women’s rifle match will be held simultaneously. Tomahawk Matches.

Museum of the Fur Trade

The Museum of the Fur Trade is much more than just another history museum – it is a step back in time. Located three miles east of Chadron, Nebraska, the museum includes over 6,000 artifacts to illustrate daily life in early America for fur traders and Native Americans. The museum is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 1-Oct. 31 and by appointment the remainder of the year.

The World Championship Buffalo Chip Throw will take place at 1 pm on Saturday, July 11, 2020 on the lawn of the Dawes County Courthouse. Join us for one of the most exciting activities during Chadron Fur Trade Days. Saturday, directly following the parade, our annual Buffalo Burger BBQ, hosted by The Chadron Chamber Ambassadors, will coincide with the Championship Buffalo Chip Throw! Grab a burger in one hand and a piece of poo in  the other and get your throwing arm ready for the challenging  and competitive Buffalo Chip Throw!

Parade begins at 10 am at 10th street and will process down main street to 1st street. Pull up a seat along the route and enjoy the floats and other entries.

The Bordeaux Creek Fur Trade and Muzzleloading Association’s Rendezvous is located 3.5 miles east and 8 miles south of Chadron. Each year there are numerous activities that take place at the camp. Stay tuned for more details about the upcoming 2020 Rendezvous. Check out the fur, handicrafts, bead work and other period items offered for sale by traders.

*COVID 19 NOTES: Hand sanitizer will be provided near each outhouse facility. Six-foot social distancing, frequent hand washing and masks are encouraged to the extent participants feel comfortable.

The Colter Run starts at Chadron State College and offers a 5k, 10k run and a 2 mile Fun Walk.
