Agate Fossil Beds National Monument

Captain James H. Cook and his son Harold developed a headquarters at Agate Springs Ranch for paleontologists interested in the fossils of ancient mammals discovered in the area in the late 1800s. Join us for the 2024 Northwest Nebraska Volksmarch and explore Carnegie and University Hills. Look closely to discover in-situ fossils, native wildflowers and grasses and the local wildlife. Back at the Visitor’s Center, delve more deeply into the geological and fossil record of the region and admire the unique collection of Native American objects gifted to Cook through his friendly relations with the Oglala Lakota Sioux, including Chief Red Cloud.

Agate Fossil Beds National Monument is one of the region’s seasonal Volksmarches, so you’ll be able to check it off your bucket list during this event. Take extra time to visit the two other area year rounds/seasonal at Chadron State College  and Fort Robinson State Park (White River Volksmarch).
